iSCADA Provides Transformer Monitoring for a Major Public Facility Serving the Rocky Mountain and Northwest Regions

Englewood, Colorado - May 2, 2023 - A major public utility serving the Rocky Mountain and Northwest regions, has applied M2M's transformer monitoring application, iSCADA, at their Denver Terminal Station to monitor the sample rate, with a robust alarm system providing safety and security for detecting out-of-limit operations. iSCADA is interfaced with various onsite monitoring equipment, making temperature and dissolved gas readings available to staff in real-time for secure viewing over the Internet.

iSCADA is a comprehensive, rapid deployment Internet-based solution that connects remote devices to a full-featured managed service for monitoring and control. The benefits of the meter iSCADA solution are real-time acquisition and display of data, real-time alarming, presentation of data via a standard browser, and the highest level of data and system security.

In order to generate more power through transformers to achieve full plant output, the utility ordered new transformers to replace parallel existing units. The utility needed to find a way to temporarily increase plant output. The Station was usually lightly loaded before forced outages caused need to run the plant; therefore oil and winding temperatures were low. Transformer experts could exploit these low temperatures, if they had real-time monitoring. An Internet-based real-time monitoring system from M2M was selected to enable these experts to monitor transformers from diverse work locations including from home. Parameters monitored are top oil and winding temperature, plus total dissolved combustible gasses, with a 1-minute sample rate.

Power generation above transformer MVA ratings was judged acceptable with a monitoring system in place, provided the total dissolved combustible gasses remained low and top oil and winding temperatures remained below preset limits. iSCADA reports these values to transformer experts advising plant and system operators about transformer loads above nameplate. iSCADA issues alarms when variables exceed pre-set limits, providing a back-up system.
