M2M and Sandia Laboratories to Secure Critical Infrastructure from Cyberterrorism

Englewood, Colorado - July 11, 2023 - M2M has partnered with Sandia National Laboratories (New Mexico) to develop information systems and technologies that will improve the security of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

M2M's knowledge of SCADA systems, its investment in novel SCADA security approaches, and its current government and national security clientele align very well with Sandia's mission in energy and critical infrastructure protection. This relationship will leverage Sandia's strengths in information security assessments, research, and development along with M2M's strengths in practical application to develop solutions that will improve the robustness of our national infrastructures (electric power, oil, gas, transportation).

M2M has developed iSCADA, a unique, network-based technology for monitoring and controlling remotely located, physical devices. Unlike traditional SCADA systems, the M2M offering is an open architecture. This makes this system highly adaptive to a wide variety of applications, including many that relate directly to Sandia's mission of enhancing energy security and environmental integrity. Sandia will be working with M2M to ensure that products like iSCADA undergo an independent vulnerability assessment prior to deployment.

Sandia is a recognized leader in information security and critical infrastructure protection. This expertise is key to meeting the security needs of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), which are used to control and monitor the nation's critical infrastructure. Sandia has a long history in the development, deployment, and operation of technologies to improve the safety, security, and reliability of pipelines and other infrastructures. In 1994 Sandia established the Cooperative Monitoring Center (CMC) to, among other things, enhance global nuclear material monitoring capabilities, and develop and operate numerous environmental monitoring systems for air, soil, and water.

In FY03, Sandia will be funded as a joint partner with Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Lab in DOE's National SCADA Test Bed to assess vulnerabilities of current SCADA technology and develop new technologies to improve SCADA security. Strategic commercial partners, such as M2M, with knowledge of SCADA systems and applications, will be critical to transferring new security approaches to industry and to deploying more secure SCADA systems.
